IGB Computer Lab

In the IGB Gatehouse, a newly updated classroom boasts the latest in computer-sharing technology. This state-of-the-art system incorporates two components: classroom computers that can perform everyday tasks, and a powerful server cluster that can handle complex programs and large quantities of information. The clustered setup not only lets users work more quickly and efficiently, but also gives them the opportunity to learn Linux and gain real-world experience using clusters.

Classroom Computers

Forty-eight Dell Optiplex 9020 23” All-in-One computers with 2.9GHz Intel Core i5 processors are spread out in the classroom for individual use. Each computer has 8GB of RAM and runs a Windows operating system. The software is managed with Dell Wyse Computer Management Software, which lets one software image be distributed across all the computers.


In a server room outside of the classroom itself, a cluster handles more complicated programs. The classroom queue consists of Dell 1950III servers, each with a two quad-core Intel 2.8GHz processor, 16 GB of RAM, and 500GB of disk space. There are 24 nodes supplying 192 processors-four processors per classroom computer. Work submission is handled through PBS Torque.

The classroom queue is a small portion of the larger Biocluster that consists of 67 nodes that contain over 2200 processors and over 17.7TB of memory.  Storage on the cluster is over 600TB in size.  More information on Biocluster can be found at and
